A spoonful of sugar!

10th September 2011 – 8.30am

Ok, I’m just gunna say this straight off the mark… Mary Poppins kicks arse!

I was sure it wouldn’t be my cup of tea so was just going for the experience.  But alas, I got lost in the story and Mary’s dreamy eyes!  The sets are absolutely incredible and the scene changes clever and seamless. The theatre itself was old and novel but the seats a little uncomfortable, the 2hrs 45min seemed to fly by though.

The security around NY the last 2 days has been overkill. Army Chinook and Iraquoi choppers were all over Manhattan, the buzz in the sky was constant.  The Navy was in town with an aircraft carrier and a submarine in the Hudson River, there was a Blackbird on the aircraft carrier too (previous fastest attack plane in the world). Police stationed almost every street corner and there were roadblocks searching trucks/vans in the street.  Private security and uniforms everywhere. The NYPD had been practicing ‘surges’ where several emergency vehicles converge on one point in the city in as little time as possible. We think we saw one of these outside the hotel in the middle of the night as everyone rocked up in a hurry but just chilled when they got there, hah.

Anyway, we are now on our way up to Ontario on an Amtrak service. As awesome as NY is we are glad to be moving on to somewhere new. The rail runs north on the east bank of the Hudson River and it is beautiful. There are cliffs on the west side of the river with old buildings and chateaus atop. The Hudson is a big river, so far the narrowest part I’ve seen must be some 400-500m. The train itself is comfy and we got power points at our seat so I can nerd it up the whole way!
