5th September – 10am (LA time!)
Yesterday morning we left our room early for Universal Studios, we swapped hotels last night to be closer to the airport this morning for a 9am flight. On the way to Universal we chatted to (actually it was more like we were chatted AT by) a chap who asked if we were from London and then proceeded to speak with an English accent, saying random things like “I haven’t the foggiest idea” and “It’s elementary, Watson.” He was saying how much Americans liked Aussies because we’re “not stuck up like the Brits!”
Universal Studios is a pretty incredible place that’s vibrant and fun. We got there early and before it was packed. We shelled out the extra money for a Front of Line Pass which proved to be invaluable later in the day, as we skipped HOURS of queuing and always got good seats. Matt forced me to go on a couple of rides, and I’m glad he did because they were so much fun. The Simpsons ride was fantastic, it’s one of those simulator rides, but so realistic, they even squirt scents at you! During the ride, you get picked up by Maggie (who has mutated into a giant baby) and you can smell baby. It’s hilarious, we loved it. We went on the Return of the Mummy Rollercoaster and Jurassic Park, which was Matt’s favourite. We got a bit soaked by the dinosaurs spitting water at us, and of course there was the standard rollercoaster/big splash at the end, i.e. we got saturated.

We met up with my Aunty Judy and Cousin Kate who, by coincidence, were visiting LA too! We had a really fun day catching up with them and seeing all of the attractions at the Park, we all loved the Water World Stunt Show. The Terminator show was so lame! It would have been so cool back in the early 90s but that was 20 years ago and I think it’s time for an update…

I had some serious cankles last night after another full day of walking. We shifted to our new hotel, which was a piece of cake, everything fell into place and we hardly had to do any walking with our packs on, thank God. It was pretty much from one bus to the next thanks to a friendly Aussie who overheard us plotting our mammoth rail/walk/shuttle/taxi route.
We got a really good night’s rest and loaded up again this morning for what seemed like our 50th trip to the LAX.
Security at LAX is INSANE… which is a good thing. They have full body scanners which were a little intimidating… they can see your bits!!!
Right now, we are about 1 hour into our flight to New York. It’s just over 4.5 hours to NY, so we’ll be getting in at around 5pm NY time. Matt has already read the Sky Mall Catalogue, cover to cover, with highlights such as an Anti-bacterial Wand, Cat Toilet Seat and wait for it, a Moustache Mirror. Now he’s playing a game called Dragon Fly, probably unaware he’s making his own sound effects. It’s going to be a looooong flight!
